Extra medium pony's rise from small-time solo project to touring rock band is becoming an indie rock success story. Launched from a west side apartment in Cleveland, Ohio, the group was originally a side project for singer/guitarist Rick Spitalsky, an engineer at Dial Den Recording Co. who split his time between engineering and song writing. Taking a break from guitar in local psych-folk band, Dreadful Yawns, Spitalsky began recording an album's worth of solo material during the winter of 2011. which resulted in a seven-song cassette entitled Middle pony. When the tape became a local hit, Spitalsky reached into his circle of friends to form a band, hoping to play the new songs live. Drummer/ Producer Jimmy Frysinger and guitarist turn bassist Ben Gmetro (dreadful yawns) climbed aboard. With a lineup now in place, Spitalsky's group christened itself Extra medium pony (named during a delirious road trip to Minneapolis) and began playing shows in one months time.
